    The Other Place nominated!

I’m thrilled to share the news that Sharr White’s play, ‘The Other Place’ directed by Joe Mantello (for which I recently designed the video projections) was NOMINATED for 3 LUCILLE LORTEL OFF-BROADWAY THEATER AWARDS for directing, acting, and sound design!  It’s fantastic news, and one day there will be a category for projection design…

Opening Night of The Other Place

After a fantastic run of previews with great audiences and incredible performances by Laurie, Dennis, Aya, and John, the show officially opens tonight. I hope you get the chance to see it while it’s at the Lortel, it’s a captivating piece of theater – and one of my favorites that I’ve ever designed. MCC Theater produces the best new theater in NYC, without a doubt!

First Preview at the Lucille Lortel

Very excited for tonight’s first preview of The Other Place by Sharr White at the Lucille Lortel.  After months of research, design and development followed by a very intense (and rewarding!) week of tech in the theater, we’re getting our first audience tonight. I’m very proud of this show, it’s been a great collaboration with everyone.

    Botanica

Spent time with Jim Findlay and his new project Botanica, this week.  The show features Liz Sargent, Ilan Bachrach and Chet Mazur and it investigates sentience in plant life and much more.  It tickles the Tarkovsky bone in all of us.  Looking forward to the completed work!

    IFP Film Week Conference

Between attending the conference every morning and shooting every night, this has been an intense week.  I had the singular experience of pitching a film idea in front of a packed house at the IFP conference on Thursday, and it was surprisingly fun. Thanks, IFP!

    Selective Memory

I had the chance to experience Selective Memory at The Chocolate Factory Theater last night, here in Queens.  It’s a bold meditation on image, light, and movement by Brian Rogers and Madeline Best, and I highly recommend checking it out.

    Welcome to Nowhere (the film)

Filming is moving along! We’ve shot 4 scenes, and we’re headed toward more in the coming weeks. It’s exciting to see this production coming together after years of work on the stage production. If you’re interested in finding out more about the film, check out the website here.

    R ii

Experienced Mallory Catlett‘s radical interpretation of Shakespeare’s Richard II last night at 14 Wall Street.  The re-imagined site-specific (neo)history played out high above the country’s financial center (31st floor!) and featured a brilliant performance by Peter Blomquist as the king.  I’m looking forward to seeing future incarnations of this piece!

    LDI Broadway Projection Master Class

I had the honor of speaking on a panel at LDI’s Broadway Projection Master Class at NYU this week. The panel discussed the future of projection design and technology. A very exciting dialogue with some great voices, including Josh Weisberg, Darrel Maloney, and Loren Barton. I’m looking forward to continuing the conversation in the years to come. A HUGE thank you to Ellen Lampert-Greaux for the invitation and to Arianna Knapp for her excellent moderation of the panel. And another HUGE thank you to Live Design for being so supportive of young designers and open to outside voices.

An Instrument For The Measure Of Absence

    2009-2011 | Interactive Video Installation (7.1 Surround)

Addressing issues of loss, isolation and loneliness, spectators willingly enclose themselves in an ominous closet-like rectangular box. Alone in the dark, whispering voices invite the viewer to undergo the voyeuristic experience of peering through a small hole in the back wall of the box, where they experience measurements of emptiness, unreality and the void. The installation is presented inside a claustrophobic box structure. The work is based on Americana Kamikaze, a hybrid theater/cinema performance which premiered at Performance Space 122 in October 2009.
